The Short Answer

Yes — and the people who heard him reached for stones, which tells you exactly how they understood him. Jesus took God's own name from the burning bush and wore it: "Before Abraham was, I AM" (John 8:58). He forgave sins only God could forgive, accepted worship devout Jews gave no one but God, claimed he would judge the world, and answered the high priest's direct question — *are you the Son of the Blessed?* — with "I am." They executed him for it. The one thing the evidence doesn't allow is a Jesus who only claimed to be a nice teacher.

How sure are we? His enemies, his friends, and his own words all agree on what he claimed

ἐγώ εἰμι
ego eimi — "I AM"

Why It Matters

C.S. Lewis said it best: a man who claimed what Jesus claimed is either lying, insane, or Lord — but the one option he left us is "just a good teacher." The claim forces a verdict.
