Firstborn son of Abraham through Hagar. God promised he would become the father of twelve rulers and a great nation (Genesis 17:20), and He faithfully kept that promise. However, God established His covenant exclusively through Isaac, not Ishmael: 'My covenant I will establish with Isaac' (Genesis 17:21). Circumcised at age thirteen as part of Abraham's household.
